HONOLULU 2010 Seminar Descriptions
Seminar Series No. 1 • Thursday, March 4 • 8:30 pm–9:45 pm
1. Voddie Baucham • Family Integrated Church • Rm 310
Does the Bible have anything to say about the way we organize the church? How about the way we do discipleship? Voddie Baucham believes it does. This message examines the biblical portrait of home-based discipleship and its implications for the way we do church. This one is not for the fainthearted.
2. Ed Brackenbury • Try to Remember • Rm 318A
Marriage is built upon many wonderful memories that can be of significant help in negotiating “dry spells” where life becomes routine and marriage lacks intimacy. We will discuss how to revitalize a marriage and rediscover the full meaning of romance. Practical tips and helpful handouts will be featured. Integrating many scriptural passages to rekindle romance will be a sustaining “thread” to our seminar.
3. Rick Bundschuh • Ready, Fire, Aim! • Rm 328
Get tips on creating reachable goals, and developing wise and strategic thinking while avoiding land mines and pitfalls that make so many ministries ineffective. Great stuff for anyone who has a ministry or area they are in charge of that they want to see succeed.
4. Tony Campolo • Spiritual Disciplines and Living Out the Gospel • Rm 315
This seminar will link the disciplines of spiritual formation with evangelism and social activism. Spiritual disciplines of prayer and lectio divina (a special way of praying and reading scripture) not only motivate Christians to do evangelism and engage in efforts for social justice, but are essential for preventing spiritual burnout. Much of what will be covered in this seminar will be a review of aspects of the book The God of Intimacy and Action, co-authored with Mary Darling.
5. Don Cousins • Finding Contentment in Life and Ministry • Rm 311
Is it possible to truly be content? Free of agitation and frustration, anxiety and fear? Most of us have a bad case of the “If Only’s”….If only I made more money…If only I had a different job….If only my ministry were more effective….if only my kids were thriving….if only my health was better….if only I had a different house….if only my spouse was more supportive….If only….. It seems like we’re always one or two “If Only’s” away from being content. Consider Paul’s words in Philippians 4:11, ”I have learned to be content in any circumstance.” Really? Is that possible? Well, yes, it is possible, and in this session we’re going to learn how. We will discover what Paul learned that enabled him to experience the “peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension.” It is this peace that cures even the most severe case of the “If Only’s.”
6. Gary Hamrick • Simple, Transferable Tools for Sharing the Gospel • Rm 319B
Why is it so hard for us to share the gospel, especially with friends and relatives? Love compels us, but then fear prevents us. This session will add Simple, Transferable Tools to your witnessing belt, things you can do, be and say to become the witness we all desire to be. You will learn to:
7. Rod Handley • Success in God’s Eyes • Rm 320
What is the world’s definition of success? What is God’s definition of success? Is it okay to be successful? How should believers handle their success? These are among the many questions we will answer to help understand what success looks like from God’s perspective. Plus, we will look at 7 success principles to take home at the conclusion of the conference.
8. Bonnie Holcombe • Light in the Darkness: The Changing Faces of Incarceration • Rm 322AB
How do we make a difference in an indifferent world regarding those who are incarcerated? Do we have a responsibility to prisoners, their children and caregivers? What does God say about those who are locked away, out of sight and out of mind? Shouldn’t they get what they deserve? See and hear what God is doing behind prison walls and be challenged to become a prisoner yourself.
9. Chip Ingram • How to Move Your People From “In” to “All In” • Rm 301B
Why do we have so many decisions and so few disciples? Why do we have so many fans of Jesus but so few followers? In a recent pastoral survey almost 90% of pastors agreed that the number one need in the church was spiritual maturity. How do you move those in your congregation from being consumers and spectators to passionate followers while avoiding the pitfalls of legalism, more programs, and quick-fix spiritual formulas? That’s what we will tackle together in this session.
10. Jan Johnson • Anger Thrives When Buried Alive • Rm 323B
Let’s get real. Didn’t Jesus get angry and want to strangle the Pharisees? We’ll look at how Jesus handled frustrating situations and then how we can process anger and frustration with God (instead of hiding it from God) as well as how to become the kind of person who “speaks the truth in love.”
11. Norman Nakanishi • Releasing Miracles by Simply Hearing God • Rm 317B
God’s supernatural intervention often follows our response to his very simple promptings. In this session, discover again how to simply discern God’s voice and what can happen when we respond with childlike simplicity.
12. Steve Peich • Setting Captives Free: The Problem of Human Trafficking and What We Christians Can Do About It • Rm 318B
According to experts there are about 27 million slaves in the world today. That means there are more slaves now than in all the 400 years of the North Atlantic slave trade. Most people think that slavery, a.k.a “human trafficking,” is a problem of the third world countries and poverty-stricken cities. The reality is that human trafficking is in every country and in every corner of the world – including Hawai‘i. This seminar will give an overview of the problem of human trafficking and provide practical ways in which Christians can minister to victims of trafficking and help eradicate this tragic problem in Hawai‘i and around the world.
13. Cliff & Joyce Penner • Sparking the Ho-Hum, No-Hum Marriage: When Sex Has Lost the Fulfillment God Intended • Rm 324
The dilemma of decreased sex in married couples has reached epidemic proportions in Western culture. Cliff and Joyce, in their practice as sexual therapists, have identified three basic categories for low sex/sexless marriages: one or both spouses may have brought issues from their history; there may be health or hormonal difficulties; the couple’s home life patterns or relationship issues may have caused their sex life to die gradually or precipitously. Both may have pulled away from sexual intimacy, but more commonly one feels deprived and the other experiences pressure. The causes will be extensively explored with specific recommendations for change and venues for finding the love, connection and passion so important to marriage.
14. Christy Pierce • Inner Healing: Healing What Hurts Most • Rm 304AB
Scripture tells us, “God is close to the brokenhearted.” And yet, intellectual knowledge of that truth is one thing, but experiencing the Living God healing our heart-wounds is another. There are deep wounds of the soul that only Jesus can heal. People close to us may betray us, life can deal hard blows, childhood wounds can still follow us years later, depression and anxiety weigh us down…but no heart-wound is too big for Jesus to heal. Join us for this seminar if you would like to learn more about practical ways to pray for inner healing for others or yourself. Also, this will be a safe, confidential place to receive inner-healing prayer. Christy Pierce and her Eagles Nest ministry team will be there to teach, encourage and pray for inner healing for those who long to experience the close and personal touch of a loving God.
15. Jeff Schulte • Why Men Need Men (Men Only) • Rm 323C
What happens when little boys grow up and the cheering stops? What happens when a man gets distracted from what’s most important in life? Many men don’t have other men who are pulling at them, pulling on them and pulling for them. If you are a man, or if you are in ministry with other men, this session will show you why men uniquely need men…and will equip you to encourage and develop man-to-man connections that help men make sense of where they are going in life and call us to nobler things.
16. Margaret Spicer • Communicating So Kids Really Get It • Rm 323A
Don’t just “tell the Bible story,” craft an experience that is relevant and applicable to each child, no matter what their age or stage so that what the kids encounter on Sunday makes a difference in their lives Monday to Saturday. Whether you are a large group communicator or a small group leader, what you say and how you say it makes all the difference. In this interactive session, we will explore techniques of communication for both large groups and small groups that will enhance the life changing message that we long for kids to understand.

18. Sibyl Towner • Responding to God in Your Story • Rm 301A
Using the My Life Story Visual Map we will walk through the process of documenting your story in a way that allows you to see it from a new perspective. One purpose of documenting your story is to uncover how beloved you are by the God who created you, so that you can live with more grace, purpose and without fear. Reflecting on your story helps you understand why you are the way you are, move toward resolutions of past hurts through the work of forgiveness and become more grateful for all of your life. This personal process will allow you to be more open in listening well to the beauty and pain in the stories of others. Learning Outcomes:
19. Kyle Van Houtan • Is God Green? Jesus, the Church, and Caring for the Earth • Rm 319A
Christians everywhere are searching for environmental leadership. Climate change, natural disasters, emerging diseases, and dwindling resources dominate the headlines. And yet, a distinctive voice from the Church is often faint. How do Christians who take the Bible seriously respond to these issues faithfully? Does the disappearance of a species – extinction – have any greater meaning for one who sees the world as created? This seminar examines the common responses Christians have toward environmental issues and addresses them through the biblical text. We will focus on the claims of Jesus Christ, of himself, of history, and of the world to understand environmental issues. It is here where stewardship and Christian virtues are found.

This workshop will focus on promoting healthy sexuality by educating parents to model and teach their children healthy sexual attitudes and accurate facts.
17. Jordan Seng • Hearing God Through Dreams • Rm 304AB
Does God speak to you directly? How can you tell? Exactly how do you go about understanding dreams and visions, and how can you get better at it? Virtually every culture on earth recognizes that dreams can be divinely inspired, and the Bible is full of examples of God speaking to believers and non-believers in dreams. Often, though, dreams require symbolic interpretation, and that requires wisdom and practice. Using 20 years of interpretation experience and practical tips from the Bible, Jordan will offer coaching on dream discernment and interpretation, and in general will provide help for those interested in hearing the supernatural voice of God in everyday life. Attenders are invited to come with dreams for which they’d like to receive some interpretation.

Jim has spoken to more than a million students on the Purity Code. This is a session you will not want to miss. It is Jim’s latest material (coming out this summer with books for adults, pre-teens, teens, and children as Pure Foundations) — practical, challenging, and encouraging, with bits of humor. We will probe into the why’s and how’s of worship leadership – not just what we do, but also the theology and spirituality that underlie practical techniques and skills.
6. Chip Ingram • How to Grow a High Impact Church • Rm 311
A high impact church has three characteristics: lost people are regularly coming to Christ, found people are growing to spiritual maturity, and the church is meeting the most significant needs in the community. God’s true measure of church health is not based on numbers. He sees the fruit…defined by impact. The high impact church is an operational process based on 12 laws of building healthy, growing churches. These principles have been effectively implemented by tens of thousands of pastors around the world regardless of the size, culture or denomination of the church, and without compromising theological heritage.

12. Cliff & Joyce Penner • Women & Sex: Freeing Women to Embrace Their Sexuality • Rm 324
The Penners are convinced that God designed sex as much for women as He did for men. In fact, women are much more complex in their design than men. As we help women embrace their sexuality, they enjoy vitality in life as a single and find sexual fulfillment in marriage because they have realistic expectations, accept their design, are able to listen to their bodies, can affirm and express their sexual feelings, can say “No” and can let go.
13. Jeff Schulte • Men at War (Men Only) • Rm 323C
The threat is real. The enemy is real. The bullets are real. The wounds are real. Most Christians have some idea for how to improve “normal” ministries such as preaching, teaching, worship or evangelism. But how does one get better at supernatural ministries such as healing, deliverance, or prophecy? Jesus suggests that the key is not how one goes about doing a given miracle, but rather how one prepares to go about doing it. Supernatural ministry goes hand in hand with a supernatural way of living. We can’t live a natural (normal) life and expect to move in a lot of supernatural power. In this seminar, Jordan examines helpful biblical principles and shares from years of experience in supernatural ministries. This seminar will include ministry to the sick or injured in attendance.

A good reference for this seminar is Tony’s book Red Letter Christians.
4. Don Cousins • Passing Tests That God Issues • Rm 320

Gaining a biblical perspective on times of testing can make all the difference in whether or not you pass, as well as how quickly such times come to an end. Come and gain perspective and encouragement along the way.
